Chapter 114

In the blink of an eye, Stella noticed Isabella standing outside the door.

Immediately, her face darkened, and she strode to the door, blocking Isabella's way. "Who told you to come here? Get out! Michael doesn't need your concern, nor does he want to see you."

Michael had never suffered like this before. He took a knife for Isabella and got injured, yet she couldn't even be bothered to come and see him.

Even an ordinary person would treat Michael as a lifesaver in such a situation.

But Isabella, who acted as if this had nothing to do with her, with a heart as cold as ice.

Stella had seen through it all. So what if Isabella was the heiress of the Wilson Family? Her heart was no longer with Michael. Even if she forced her to stay, she would only bring harm to Michael.

"I'm late. How is he now?" Isabella's voice was soft, but her eyes couldn't help but glance inside the ward.

Seeing Isabella's demeanor, Stella sneered. "You know you're late? I thought you didn't even know who Michael got hurt for. Michael took a knife from Harper to save you. When he came out of surgery, his face was as pale as a sheet. Where were you then? If you really cared about him, you should have stayed by his side. And now you come here pretending to care? We don't need it."

Stella's words grew harsher with each sentence. Isabella, already exhausted from a long day, had no energy left to argue.

But as she looked at Michael lying in the hospital bed, she couldn't bring herself to leave.

"What are you still looking at? Leave, you're not welcome here." Stella urged her to go.

Just as Isabella was about to turn around, a hoarse, familiar voice sounded from behind. "Mom, let her in."

Realizing Michael was wake, Isabella's body trembled.

Hearing Michael's voice, Stella, no matter how angry, couldn't ignore his feelings.

She went over to pour Michael a glass of water and asked if he needed a doctor. Michael shook his head. "Mom, it's late. You should go home."

He had heard their conversation just now.

Michael knew Stella's temper well and worried that Isabella might leave in a fit of anger.

Stella could see Michael's thoughts clearly. She felt both heartache and frustration for him.

Isabella had treated him like this, but he still couldn't let her go.

Aaron came over and said, "Mr. Brown, I'll stay here. Mrs. Stella Brown, you don't need to worry."

Reluctantly, Stella had to leave, planning to come back first thing in the morning. "Alright, I'll go. If your wound hurts at night, call the doctor. Don't tough it out, okay?"

"I know." Michael nodded slightly.

Even so, Stella couldn't be completely at ease. She gave Aaron some additional instructions before leaving.

Aaron went outside to see her off.

Inside the ward, only the two of them remained.

Michael's gaze hadn't left her since she appeared. Isabella walked in.

She stood by the bed, wanting to ask how he was, but seeing his pale face, all her questions turned to blankness.

No matter how strained their relationship had become, she should come to see him when he was injured and hospitalized.

After all, if Michael hadn't stepped in, she would be the one lying in that bed now.

The atmosphere turned silent.

Michael had intended to speak, but thinking about how Isabella had left him alone in the hospital to pick up Nolan, he felt a lump in his throat.

But they couldn't stay in this stalemate forever.

Michael frowned, propping himself up with his arm to sit up, accidentally pulling at his wound, causing him to freeze in pain.

"Isabella..." Before he could call her name, Isabella's hands reached out to support him.

She grabbed a pillow and placed it behind his waist, easing his pain.

When she looked up, she met Michael's deep eyes. She took a step back and explained, "Don't overthink it. I'm just helping you because you got hurt because of me."

"I know." Michael's voice was calm, just as emotionless as before.

He glanced at her, then reached for the laptop on the table. He had an important meeting today, but he had postponed it because of her call.

This collaboration could have been completed today, but because he ended up in the hospital, all the work had piled up.

He had to handle it now to avoid any mistakes tomorrow.

Seeing his actions, Isabella frowned but didn't help him with the laptop. Instead, she pressed down on his hand. "Your injury is so severe, and you still want to work?"

At that moment, she couldn't convince herself that she had let go because she still had uncontrollable feelings for Michael.

"I'm fine. It's not a serious injury. Michael didn't push her hand away but picked up the laptop and placed it in front of him.

Once it was open, he quickly entered work mode.

Even so, he didn't forget her. "It's late. You should go now. Let Aaron take you home."

But to Isabella, it seemed like Michael, just as Stella had said, didn't want to see her here, because he didn't even spare her a glance.

They were already in the process of divorce; she shouldn't let herself make more mistakes.

Isabella had to leave. Aaron offered to escort her, but she refused.

However, once she reached the hospital entrance, she hesitated to call for a ride.

The late autumn night was chilly. She stood outside quietly for a while, and an hour later, she returned to the ward.

Michael was injured and still working from his hospital bed, all because of her. She couldn't just leave.

Even if it was just to keep him company, it would be her way of repaying him for saving her.

She silently reminded herself that she was doing this not for him, but for the gratitude of him saving her.

The night was deep and quiet, with no sound in the corridor.

When Isabella reached the door, Aaron, who was standing outside, was surprised and asked softly, "Mrs. Isabella Brown, why are you back? Did you forget something?"

She shook her head, because she couldn't bring herself to say she came back for Michael.

So she inquired about his condition, "What did the doctor say? Will his injury have any aftereffects?"

Aaron lowered his voice. "The doctor said Mr. Brown's injury is just superficial, not serious. He can be discharged and go home after two days of observation."

"I see." Isabella nodded, feeling a weight lifted off her chest. "You don't need to worry about me. I'll just go in and check on him and then leave."

With that, she walked straight into the ward.

Only one light was left on inside. Isabella sat down beside the bed.

Under the light, Michael had his eyes closed. As he slept, his sharp features softened considerably. The high bridge of his nose cast a shadow, making his well-defined features even more striking.

After all these years of marriage, she had never had the chance to observe him so closely.

It was only after their divorce that she saw a different side of him.

The Michael before her had lost the imposing aura he had during the day, with a rare softness in his expression.

If he could really become gentler, how wonderful that would be.
