Hearing Oliver's mix of childish and mature voice, Caleb was taken aback.
He knew his son was smart, but this was next level.
Seeing Caleb's surprise, Oliver stayed calm. "Boys always want to keep the girls they like to themselves. It's just human nature."
Caleb smiled. "You know a lot."
"Of course, I'm a genius. I get things you and Mommy don't," Oliver said proudly. He often had to act clueless around his mom to avoid scaring her.
"Uncle Caleb, Francis has been after my mommy for years and treats me well. I even thought he'd make a good dad."
Caleb's face darkened.
"But Mommy only sees him as a friend. So, if she hasn't fallen for him in four years, she won't now. Don't stress. Stress gives you wrinkles and makes you ugly, and then you won't be a match for my mommy."
Caleb got the logic, but jealousy isn't rational.
When they got back to the hospital room, Caleb still looked upset.
"Did you ask the doctor? Can I leave tomorrow?" Susan asked.
"In a couple of days."
"I'm feeling better. Why a couple more days? I hate hospitals."
"The doctor said to follow medical advice. Don't be stubborn."
"Was it the doctor or you? Are you keeping me here on purpose? And why are you giving me that look? I didn't ask you to stay. Are you trying to make things hard for me?"
He hadn't said much for the past half hour, making Susan uncomfortable.
"I didn't."
"You did."
"I didn't."
"Look in the mirror and you'll see. No one asked you to stay. You can leave."
She had tried to get rid of him all morning, treating him like a pest. Caleb was also annoyed.
"Me being here bothers you, but Francis makes you happy, right?"
Susan was taken aback for a few seconds. She frowned and said, "Yeah, I like having Francis here. Talking to him is nice. Unlike you, you just make me mad. Like a fly I can't swat away."
Caleb sneered, "Should I call him back for you?"
"Sure, I'd love that." Susan smiled sweetly.
Caleb felt a pang in his heart.
Damn it, she wouldn't be happy until she drove him crazy.
"You like him that much?"
"If not him, should I like you?"
"Why can't you like me?" Caleb shot back. He was way better than Francis.
"What's there to like about you? Just seeing you makes me uncomfortable. And who asked you to meddle and pay my debts? I can handle them myself."
"Meddling?" Caleb's face darkened more.
"You can borrow from him but not from me?"
"Of course, I'm closer to Francis than to you. If I need to borrow, I'll borrow from him."
Caleb's finger got cut by the knife, and the half-peeled pear in his hand was stained with blood.
Susan's heart tightened, but she held back her words.
"If you don't want me here, I'll leave." Caleb slammed the pear down and stormed out.
Susan bit her lip. What's his problem, throwing a tantrum for no reason?
She felt angry and frustrated.
Was she too harsh?
But his attitude wasn't great either. He wasn't as attentive as before. No matter what she said, he didn't seem to care.
She felt a sudden sense of disparity and couldn't control her temper.
He kept saying he loved her and wanted to marry her, but after just a few days, he was already impatient? Men's words can't be trusted.
The more Susan thought about it, the more upset she got, even wanting to discharge herself from the hospital.
As she bit her lip in pain, a tall figure appeared in front of her.
She looked up, and there was Caleb, standing at the door.
It had only been five minutes.
Susan felt a mix of emotions. "Didn't you leave? Why are you back?"
Caleb walked in silently. "I'm sorry."
Susan was speechless.
"I shouldn't have lost my temper earlier, but I was jealous."
Even if he didn't say it, Susan could guess. He had been holding back, not talking to her.
"What are you jealous of? Do you even have the right to be jealous?"
"Even if I don't have the right, I was still jealous. Susan, I love you so much that I don't know how to win you back. I want to give you my heart, but you keep pushing me away. I once deceived you, so now, whatever you do to me, I deserve it, and I'm willing to endure it. But I can't stand you getting close to other men... It makes me feel terrible, like I'm going crazy." Caleb sighed.
"Loving someone too much is like this. I'm just an ordinary person. I have the same jealousy and possessiveness as any other man. Susan, you are my life."
Such a confession eased Susan's gloom and made her heart skip a beat.
Her ears quietly turned red.
Susan was used to saying harsh words to him, but now she didn't know how to handle it.
She was a woman, and women are naturally vulnerable to sweet talk.
And Caleb was the man she loved.
She had been so agitated earlier because she had been thinking about what Francis had said for a long time. She couldn't deny that she loved Caleb. Whether it was four years ago or now.
She loved Caleb but also hated him.
"Can you really not forgive me? I'm not asking for now, I know I need to atone for my mistakes. I just hope that while you punish me, you don't shut me out of your heart. I hope you can give me a chance. For the mistake I made four years ago, I hope to spend the next forty years making up for it."
After saying this, Caleb, afraid of pressuring her, smiled and said, "You don't have to decide now, just let things happen naturally. I only ask that you don't kick me out of the hospital."
Susan pouted. "You're too annoying."
