Anna Ross set down her glass and withdrew from the game.
Mia Lawrence pulled her aside for a private talk.
"Anna, do you think Julian actually likes me?" Mia sipped her drink, her gaze drifting across the room.
Julian Garnache sat alone on the sofa, staring at his phone with a deep frown.
Anna picked up a bottle and took a swig. It went down the wrong way, making her cough.
She caught her breath. "Should I go ask him for you?"
Mia quickly grabbed her arm. "Don't!"
Anna gave a light laugh. "You're just afraid to know the answer, aren't you?"
Mia lowered her head and took another drink.
Julian was always kind to her, but it felt more like how an older brother treats his little sister.
They drank in silence together.
Anna was soon drunk.
She clutched Mia's hand. "Mia, when Adrian and I broke up, it felt like my heart was torn in two."
Mia's eyes were bleary with alcohol. "Why did you break up?"
Anna mumbled, "Because..."
She slumped over the table, fast asleep.
Mia shook her. "Anna, do you still have feelings for Adrian?"
Anna muttered something incoherent.
Mia leaned in closer to listen, but only caught the word "like."
She sighed and laid her head down on the table, falling asleep as well.

Anna woke up in the early hours of the morning.
Her head was pounding.
The sky outside the window was still dim.
She got up to use the restroom.
She nearly tripped while passing through the living room.
She turned on the light and her heart nearly stopped.
Someone was asleep on the sofa.
It was Lucas Evans.
