Chapter 13
"You're the one who usually handles these things. How is Victoria supposed to find it?"
Evelyn scoffed. Nathaniel was just too concerned about Victoria, his first love, to let her serve someone else. Was that why he wanted her to go back and wait on both of them?
She had no interest in returning to that house and seeing Victoria lounging in her bed.
"If you can't find it, then wear something else!" Evelyn snapped before ending the call.
Her pulse raced faster than usual. She never imagined she’d be the one to hang up on Nathaniel Whitmore.
And it felt amazing.
After the call disconnected, the maid hesitated before asking, "Would you like a different tie, Mr. Whitmore?"
Nathaniel strode to the walk-in closet. Sure enough, the tie was in the second drawer—even though he’d already searched there earlier. How had he missed it?
Last night, his men had followed the helicopter for a while before losing track. Nathaniel had no idea where Evelyn had been taken.
The lack of control gnawed at him.
Once dressed, he headed to the dining room. An elaborate breakfast spread awaited him. He took one bite and immediately set his fork down. "This is terrible."
The butler, Gregory, swallowed nervously. "Before leaving, Ms. Sinclair specifically instructed us to prepare this for you, Mr. Whitmore. She said these were your favorites."
Gregory had his doubts. For the past three years, Nathaniel had eaten Evelyn’s simple, home-cooked meals.
Besides, he’d assumed Victoria would move in as the future Mrs. Whitmore, but Nathaniel had sent her home last night.
Nathaniel pushed his plate away. "I don’t like this."
His gaze flicked to the empty seat beside him. He used to be annoyed by Evelyn’s presence—now, he couldn’t stand her absence.
What the hell was wrong with him?
Evelyn rubbed her growling stomach. She’d just freshened up after waking, careful not to disturb Margaret, who was still asleep.
Alexander was in the next room, but she wasn’t sure if he was awake yet.
She slipped out and found a cozy diner nearby. In high spirits, she snapped a photo of her breakfast and posted it on Twitter with the caption: "New day, new me. No looking back."
Within minutes, Eleanor liked the post and called. "Evelyn, darling, come for dinner tonight. It’s been too long."
Evelyn hesitated. Sooner or later, she’d have to tell Eleanor about the divorce. "Alright," she agreed.
After breakfast, she grabbed takeout and headed back to the hotel.
Just then, a young man stepped out of the elevator, spotted her, and snapped a photo of her retreating figure. He sent it straight to Nathaniel with the message: "Mr. Whitmore, did you and your wife stay here last night?"
Nathaniel was already in a foul mood—hungry and irritable. When his phone buzzed, he checked it and froze.
Evelyn was at a hotel?
Was that her new boyfriend picking her up yesterday? Had they gone straight to a room?
Had she been seeing someone else before the divorce?
His jaw clenched. The thought of Evelyn with another man last night made his blood boil.
He pulled up her Twitter. "New day, new me. No looking back."
Nathaniel smirked bitterly. So she had moved on.
He turned to his assistant, Robert. "Cut off the hospital payments."
Robert blinked. "Sir, are you stopping Mrs. Whitmore’s uncle’s medical funds to force her back?"
