A smug smile touched Chloe Valentine's lips.
She twirled a strand of her hair idly.
"Don't worry, Adrian," she said softly.
"I know how to handle Grandpa."
His distant demeanor still felt like a thorn in her heart.
Without Frederick Lowell's backing, he probably wouldn't even glance her way.
But it didn't matter.
Once they were married, everything of his would belong to her.
Anna Ross stood to the side.
A sharp, aching pain spread through her chest.
So they had already reached the stage of meeting the family.
The wedding must be soon.
She knew she had no right to ask.
Yet a suffocating feeling washed over her.
It was like a waterlogged sponge, blocking her airways.
"Mr. Sinclair, Director Valentine," she said, forcing professionalism.
"I have work to attend to."

She practically fled the office.
Adrian's gaze followed her out.
His palm was damp with sweat.
He was actually nervous.

He turned to Chloe.
His voice was cold. "Since dinner is settled."
"Return to your work."
Chloe bit her lip in frustration.
He wouldn't even pretend for her.
"Adrian, I just want to spend more time with you," she cooed, swaying closer.
He gave her a frosty look.
"It's business hours."
"Maintain professionalism."
She stopped, displeased.
Noah Watson averted his eyes, pretending to be invisible.
"Fine, I'll go work," she said, suppressing her anger.
"Remember to pick me up later."
Getting no response, she stormed out, slamming the door.
Anna was reviewing documents outside.
Chloe's anger flared.
But she quickly replaced it with a triumphant smile.
She deliberately raised her voice.
"Executive Assistant Ross."
"Adrian and I are getting married soon."
"Make sure you do your job properly during this time."
"Don't mess anything up."
Anna's hand stilled on the file.
She hadn't expected a direct challenge.
Closing the file, she looked up with a professional smile.
"Don't worry, Miss Valentine."
"I will perform my duties diligently."
"Congratulations to you both."
Chloe snorted at her calm demeanor.
She strode away in her high heels.
Anna watched her leave and sighed softly.
