The Valentine parents were equally surprised.
Lydia Valentine glanced at her daughter with shifting eyes.
Chloe Valentine bit her lip hard, her nails digging deep into her palms.
Grandpa had always doted on her.
She could clearly feel that favoritism.
So why did he tactfully reject the marriage at this critical moment?
Even though her heart was in turmoil, she didn't dare show it.
She knew better than to offend the old man.
She quickly put on a gentle smile.
"Grandpa is right," she said softly. "I'm really not in a hurry right now."
"Adrian is very career-driven."
"I'm willing to wait until he's more settled before we consider marriage."
Grandpa nodded approvingly, thinking the girl knew her place.
Adrian Sinclair glanced at her sideways.
His deep, unfathomable eyes showed no emotion.
Chloe grew nervous under his gaze, afraid he might detect something.
Seeing this, the Valentine parents didn't press further.
The Valentine and Lowell families were old friends.
The marriage would happen eventually—it was only a matter of time.
"Then we'll wait a bit longer," Harold Valentine said cheerfully, smoothing things over.
"The children's happiness is what matters most."
"We elders fully support them."
Grandpa said no more, taking a sip of his tea.
"Since you're here, stay for a meal."
Harold gladly agreed.
Their return tickets were for evening, so there was plenty of time.
After the banquet, it was already late.
"Time together always passes so quickly," Mr. Valentine said with emotion. "We should be going now."
"Take care of your health, Grandpa."
Grandpa Lowell smiled kindly.
"Travel safely," he said, then turned to Adrian beside him. "See them off."
Adrian gave a slight nod.
Henry immediately stepped forward to support the old man.
In the car, Harold tried to make small talk, but Adrian showed little interest.
Arriving at the station, Mr. Valentine spoke solemnly.
"Adrian, Chloe is unfamiliar here in New York."
"Please look after her."
Adrian glanced at the figure not far away and responded indifferently, "I will."
Chloe was holding her mother's arm, saying reluctant goodbyes.
Lydia lowered her voice to advise, "Hurry and secure him. Nothing else matters."
Chloe shyly glanced at that tall, straight-backed figure.
"Don't worry, Mom," she said firmly. "He will be my husband."
Lydia nodded with satisfaction.
Harold checked the time.
"It's time to go in."
Chloe released her mother's arm and watched her parents pass through the ticket gate.
Adrian turned and walked away immediately.
Chloe hurried to catch up, afraid of being left behind.
Back in the car, she noticed Adrian checking his phone.
She felt secretly relieved that she had already deleted the call records.
He frowned slightly, his gaze fixed on a message from Anna Ross sent early that morning.
After a long moment, he spoke coldly.
"Stop the car."
The tires screeched against the pavement as the car jerked to a halt by the roadside.
