Anna Ross smoothed the edges of the scattered documents.
She meticulously straightened each paper's crease.
"Impressive as always, Executive Assistant Ross." Chloe Valentine leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed. "Adrian often praises your competence."
Her high heels clicked sharply against the floor.
She paced across the empty conference room.
Anna gathered the files and turned to leave.
"What did he say to you just now?" Chloe closed the distance, gripping Anna’s wrist.
Her nails dug into Anna’s skin.
Anna pulled free. "Ask him yourself, Miss Valentine."
She walked toward the exit without looking back.
Chloe stood rigid.
Her nails pressed deep crescents into her own palm.
How dare a mere assistant disrespect her?

The hallway echoed with emptiness.
Anna’s footsteps rang unnervingly loud.
Raised voices spilled from the CEO’s office.

The door jerked open.

Anna deliberately slowed her movements.

"Need me to carry you again?" He closed the distance abruptly.
His fingers tilted her chin up.
She slapped his hand away. "I can walk!"
"Isn’t this what you wanted?" His voice carried deliberately.
Colleagues glanced their way.
Adrian locked an arm around her shoulders, steering her toward the elevator.
Anna struggled futilely.
The elevator filled with departing staff.
