Two women stood whispering in the break room.
One lowered her voice mysteriously.
"Did you hear? Mr. Sinclair and Director Valentine are getting engaged."
The other woman covered her mouth in surprise.
"When did this happen? I had no idea."
"It should be soon. That's what I heard."
"They've kept it so quiet. I never noticed anything at work."
Her companion immediately countered.
"Didn't she get promoted so quickly because of that?"
"Remember when her proposal had errors? No consequences..."
"Shh, be careful. Someone might hear."

Anna Ross’s footsteps suddenly halted.
Her legs felt like lead weights.
Slowly, she pressed a hand against her chest.
A sharp pain pierced through her.
He was truly getting engaged.

Chloe Valentine approached from the other end of the hallway.

"Adrian and I are getting engaged."
"You must attend the celebration."

hearing it directly
stabbed her heart with fresh pain.
She clenched her fingers.
Struggling to maintain her smile,
she whispered, "Of course."
Chloe watched her strained expression with satisfaction.
Leaning close, she murmured in Anna’s ear,
"Every part of me belongs to him now."
"You should stay away."
Anna froze as if struck by lightning.
For a moment, she stood paralyzed.
So this was why he’d been so distant.
With immense effort, she curved her lips.
"Congratulations to you both."
As she turned, tears blurred her vision.
She refused to wipe them away.

and collided with a solid chest.
As she looked up,
a single tear escaped down her cheek.
Adrian Sinclair looked down at her.

"Forgive me," she murmured, stepping back.
She tried to slip past, but he held her arm.
Pale-faced, she turned away.
Adrian’s eyes flickered toward Chloe.
His voice deepened. "What’s wrong?"
