Chapter 33
Adrian Sinclair scooped Anna Ross into his arms and rushed toward the parking lot.
Her face was deathly pale, her breathing faint.
His arms tightened around her. His voice was strained. "Anna, hold on. The hospital is close."
He gently placed her in the passenger seat.
He floored the accelerator.
The sports car roared into the traffic.
His knuckles were white as he gripped the steering wheel.
He burst through the ER doors, holding her.
White coats quickly surrounded them.
His voice was hoarse. "She collapsed suddenly. Please, help her!"
A doctor motioned for him to calm down.
The gurney wheels rattled urgently into the distance.
The emergency light glowed red.
Adrian leaned against the wall.
His gaze was locked on those doors.
The light went out.
He immediately stepped forward.
The doctor removed his mask, frowning. "It's a coma induced by low blood sugar."
"She must eat breakfast regularly from now on."
"Otherwise, it could be life-threatening."
Adrian froze.
He remembered how she had curled up.
He remembered Lucas Evans's supporting arm.
It wasn't intimacy. It was support.
He had misunderstood her.
The drip made a soft sound in the quiet room.
Anna lay on the white sheets.
She looked as fragile as fine china.
His fingertips lightly brushed her cold cheek.
His eyes were dark and deep.
Her eyelashes fluttered.
She slowly opened her eyes.
She took in her surroundings.
Her gaze settled on him. "Why am I in the hospital?"
He quickly pulled his hand back.
His tone was cold and hard. "I brought you."
"I wouldn't have bothered if I wasn't concerned about a death affecting work."
She tried to sit up and remove the IV. "I'm sorry for delaying work..."
He pressed her hand down firmly. "If you want to die, don't do it in front of me."
"Finish the IV. You need to recover to keep working."
She lay back in silence.
She looked like a butterfly drenched by the rain.
